Top 10 travel destinations in 2022

We are a few months away from 2022 and people are eager to explore different parts of the world again. I don’t know about you, but I’m putting together a bucket list. One thing to keep in mind is that travel looks different and it has been since 2020. Travelers now need to consider various data points, like a city’s response to COVID, their steps toward rebound, and travel restrictions. Be sure to do your due diligence before purchasing your tickets.

If you need a little inspiration, here are some top cities for the new year:

1) Alentejo, Portugal

Be prepared for jaw-dropping views. The mostly rural Alentejo province of Portugal has all you need for a stress free vacation, from colorful sunsets to quiet fishing villages.

2) Algeria

Not just for history buffs (there are 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites here!), Algeria is also for the adventurous and nature lovers. Visit the Roman ruins one day, then head over to the Sahara Desert the next. Keep in mind a visa is required for entry, so plan ahead if you are considering a visit.

3) Alta, Norway

Northern lights on your bucket list? Alta is the ideal place for this magical light display in Earth’s sky. Not only is activity frequent, but it has the most clear nights compared to its neighbors. And if you want to treat yourself, check out the “arctic dome” hotels that boast transparent walls for the ultimate northern lights viewing!

4) Antigua, Guatemala

While Antigua is a wonderful place to visit year round, its annual Semana Santa (also known as Holy Week), is a sight to be seen. Every year, during the week leading up to Easter, locals color the streets with vibrant sawdust, flowers, and decor. It is then followed by a ceremonious parade, where people and floats walk upon the colorful “carpet”.

5) Arkansas’ Ozarks

Fun fact: the Ozarks are one of the largest wilderness areas in the eastern United States. Visitors have their pick for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, swimming, and other activities. For those looking for less physical activity, there are plenty of beautiful rivers and waterfalls to see!

6) Assam, India

Calling all wildlife and eco-conscious enthusiasts! Assam, India is the perfect place to visit to see wild animals and to experience agriculture. It is also dominated by the mighty River Brahmaputra. Not only is it known for being off the beaten path, Assam is strong in ecotourism!

7) Berlin,  Germany

Berlin is known for its famed nightlife, but the pandemic put a pause to its popularity. Fortunately, the city has been renovating and rebuilding its cultural landmarks. Berlin’s vibrant art scene and opportunities to give back make it a great place to visit in the new year.

8) Vienna, Austria

Not only is Vienna a great place to visit, it’s also one of the best cities to live in! Efficient public transportation, incredible income equality, and beautiful cultural attractions make it one of a kind. They recently hosted their iconic Vienna Design Week, which had over 40,000 attendees from all over the world.

9) Ayutthaya, Thailand

If you’re headed to Bangkok, make sure to make a stop in Ayutthaya. Only a 90-minute train ride away, Ayutthaya is rich with history. It was once the largest city in the world in 1700 and its Historical Park dates back to 1350. If possible, stay overnight so you can visit the temples in the early morning and catch the sunset in late afternoon.

10) Colchagua Valley, Chile

Wine lovers rejoice! With four wine regions near the capital city of Santiago, Colchagua Valley is the one not to be missed. Known for its exquisite terroir and award-winning reds, you can’t go wrong with a glass of cabernet sauvignon or merlot. However, you must try the carménère, Chile’s flagship varietal. Besides wine, Colchagua Valley has great restaurants, breathtaking vistas, and the amazing Cerro Chamán Observatory for stargazing.
