About Big Brother Mouse
Big Brother Mouse is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to encouraging literacy in young adults through “Books that make literacy fun!” This organization focuses on publishing books that improve literacy and quality of life; and on making those books accessible, particularly in rural Lao villages. Books are scarce in Laos – many people have never read anything except old textbooks and government pamphlets. They publish books for all ages and have a growing number of titles that focus on health, nutrition, history, and science.
A Snapshot of Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang is an ancient city in Laos and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The literacy rate of Laos is about 73% and is often lower in rural areas. In a country where a quarter of the population lives below the poverty line, literacy is a critical tool to help lift Laotians out of poverty and improve their quality of life.
What Volunteers Can Do
Volunteers can help Laotians develop English language skills by reading bilingual books and engaging in conversation. In addition to learning the language, this is also a cultural exchange. Thus, volunteers are encouraged to be prepared to tell their own story, share photos of friends/family, and postcards of their home country. Remember: be prepared to speak very slowly!

The organization does not schedule volunteers; they are short staffed and unable to respond to inquiries.
