Pantanal is a barrio on the outskirts of Granada, about one hour from the capital city of Managua. Unemployment, malnutrition, and lack of educational opportunities are issues facing the community. Homes in Pantanal are mostly dirt-floor shacks that provide little protection from the elements and lack modern amenities such as running water and electricity. Though rich in natural resources and cultural diversity, Nicaragua is financially amongst the poorest of countries in the Americas and has the highest primary school dropout rate in Central America.
About Education Plus Education Plus Nicaragua began as an after-school program at the home of 8-year old Prisila Castillo. Forty children from the barrio came that first day to take classes from three volunteers, while Prisila’s mother and aunt cooked food for them. Today the program has relocated to a dedicated community space, has grown in staff and students alike, and has been renamed to Casa de los Sueños (“House of Dreams”). It remains a safe and nurturing place, where Pantanal’s children come to attend after-school classes, eat, play, receive medical check-ups, and fulfill their potential.
Volunteering at Education Plus One day volunteers can help with activities such as doing puzzles, practicing reading, playing games outdoors or even participating in a weekly dance party! They also offer ½ day neighborhood walking tours.
