About This Project

About FIMRC

Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) operates a free medical clinic in Alajuelita to provide all families with access to medical care. FIMRC provides psychological services and conducts health outreach programs to educate the community about nutrition, hygiene, healthy lifestyles, and preventative care. They also work with a local soup kitchen to provide nourishing midday meals to mothers and children.

A Snapshot of Alajuelita

Just five miles from the center of San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica, is an impoverished community called Alajuelita. The residents of this neighborhood are primarily immigrants from neighboring Nicaragua, who have fled natural disasters, political conflict and lack of economic opportunity in their homeland. The population of Alajuelita is comprised of primarily women and children. Most of them lack health insurance and are unable to afford medical care.

Volunteering at FIMRC

FIMRC often welcomes volunteers to spend the day assisting local staff at the clinic or in the soup kitchen. Click on the link below to learn more about the organization and about volunteer opportunities. You may contact them directly through their website or use the contact form below.

“If you are seeking an opportunity to get to know the countries and communities you are visiting on a deeper level, definitely partake in Give a Day Global! The teams both at Give A Day Global and at FIMRC were exceptionally helpful and welcoming, leading to my very special volunteer experience in Costa Rica.” – Aiko Y
