From Houses to Homes enters indigenous communities to work with some of the poorest of Guatemalan families to replace a cornstalk shack with a block home that is affordable to maintain. This 13 X 19 home has a locking door to provide a better security and a roof to protect from the elements. From Houses to Homes has been working in Guatemala since 2004, and have built over 1000 homes. They also fund health clinic and a local school to improve health and opportunities for the future.
A Snapshot of Guatemala
Guatemala is rich in nature and spirit, but among the largest population of extreme poverty in Central America. A lack of resources causes many indigenous families live in makeshift homes that are constructed of nothing more than cornstalk or cardboard walls with dirt floors. Such homes are inadequate shelter from the elements, and contribute to chronic health problems.
